Five Signs Your Brakes Need Attention

Brakes tell you when something has changed. Any one of these is reason to book an inspection now rather than wait for the next routine visit.

Grinding or Squealing

A high squeal can mean the pads are near the end. Grinding can mean metal is meeting metal, and then the rotors may need work as well as the pads.

Vibration

A pulse through the pedal or the steering wheel as you slow down can point to the rotors. Have it checked rather than learning to drive around it.

A Soft Pedal

A pedal that feels spongy, or sinks further than it used to, needs prompt attention. It can mean air or moisture in the fluid, or a leak.

Pulling to One Side

If the car drifts left or right under braking, one side is doing more of the work, which can come from a sticking caliper.

A Warning Light

A brake warning light is the car asking for an inspection. Check the owner's manual for what the light means on your model, then call.

The Inspection

What a Brake Inspection Looks At

1

Pads and Rotors

Pad thickness is measured and the rotors are checked for wear and for the uneven surface that can cause a pulsing pedal.

2

Calipers and Hardware

A thorough brake inspection also looks at the calipers, pins and clips; ask your advisor what yours covers.

3

Fluid and Lines

A soft pedal can start with the brake fluid or the hoses and lines that carry it, so ask for those to be checked.

4

Findings, Then a Quote

Your advisor explains what was found and what it costs to put right, and nothing is repaired until you approve it.

How Often

How Often to Check Brakes

Your owner's Maintenance Guide sets the inspection schedule for your model. No single mileage suits every Toyota, and a number on a web page cannot know how you drive. The brakes are also part of the multi-point inspection at regular service visits, so on a car serviced on schedule the wear is measured along the way.

How you drive moves that wear faster or slower: stop-and-go traffic on US-41 and short errands full of braking ask more of the brakes than steady highway miles. If any of the signs above show up between visits, do not wait for the next one.

Tell us what the brakes are doing and when it started, and send the form, or call (239) 301-3158 to book the inspection. If new pads or rotors are needed, the parts and their warranty are set out on our genuine Toyota brakes page, and brake fluid service has its own page too: fluid replacement.

Follow the Maintenance Guide, and do not wait on a warning sign.

Common Questions

Brake Repair Questions

Describe the noise or the feel, and when it happens. That gets you a more useful first answer than any general rule.

Call Service

Listen and feel for change. Grinding or squealing, a vibration when you slow down, a soft or sinking pedal, the car pulling to one side, or a brake warning light are all reasons to have the brakes inspected. An inspection tells you whether it is pads, rotors, a caliper or the fluid.

As often as your owner's Maintenance Guide says for your model. The brakes are also part of the multi-point inspection at regular service visits. If you notice any warning sign in between, book an inspection rather than waiting.

Have it inspected as soon as you can. Grinding can mean the pad material is gone and metal is wearing against the rotor, which can reduce braking and damage parts that might otherwise have been reused. Call the service department at (239) 301-3158 to describe what you hear.

Pad thickness and the rotors are measured, and your advisor will tell you what else the inspection covers. Your advisor then explains the findings and gives you a quote, and no repair starts until you approve it.

Toyota Genuine Parts. What they are and the warranty Toyota puts behind them when a dealer installs them are on our genuine Toyota brakes page.

Yes. Brakes are part of the multi-point inspection at regular visits, including Express Maintenance. If something already feels wrong, though, book a brake inspection now instead of waiting for the next visit.

Call the service department at (239) 301-3158, or send the form on this page with a short description of what the brakes are doing. Current service hours are on the hours and directions page.
