The midsize SUV is smaller than a standard SUV but larger than a sedan, ultimately providing the benefits of both. Not too small but not too large, they are “just right” with the vantage point of a larger vehicle paired with the superior gas mileage of a smaller one. In 2023, the Toyota Highlander and the Chevy Traverse are two of the most popular midsize SUV models. Both options offer three rows of seating to accommodate up to eight passengers, touchscreen displays, and smartphone pairing capabilities. However, that may be where the similarities end. Here are some key differences between the new Toyota Highlander and Chevy Traverse.
Safety
Midsize SUVs tend to perform well in crash tests and are good safety picks in general. The new Highlander comes standard with Toyota Safety Senseâ„¢ in all trim levels, which includes lane and steering assist, automatic high beams, dynamic radar cruise control, and pre-collision alert system. The Traverse offers additional safety features too, but updating the trim level is required to access them. In addition, last year’s Highlander won an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, which is the organization’s highest possible rating. On the other hand, the same year’s Traverse didn’t win safety awards, but the model was still able to earn an “acceptable” rating from the IIHS.

Performance
Each of these vehicles have a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds and all-wheel drive, making both options a good choice for adventuring on and off the road. The 2023 Toyota Highlander comes with either a turbocharged 2.4-liter in-line four engine at 265 horsepower or a four-cylinder hybrid engine at 243 horsepower. In comparison, the 2023 Chevy Traverse boasts a V-6 engine with 310 horsepower. The Highlander may be disadvantaged in the engine department, but it makes up for it with superior maneuverability. This is due to its turning circle of 37.4 feet, which is more favorable than the 39 feet offered by the Traverse.

Fuel Efficiency
When miles-per-gallon are concerned, the Highlander comes out slightly ahead of the Traverse. The 2023 Chevy Traverse earns an estimated 18 city miles and 27 highway miles per gallon. In comparison, the gas-powered Toyota Highlander is marginally better at 21 city and 29 highway mpg. The Highlander Hybrid offers the best fuel economy with up to 36 city and 35 highway mpg.
